Farshad Farivar says that Orienteering is a family sports that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain, and normally moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points.

Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations. Among these, the oldest and the most popular is foot orienteering. For the purposes of this article, Farshad Farivar feels that foot orienteering serves as a point of departure for discussion of all other variations, but basically any sport that involves racing against a clock and requires navigation using a map is a type of orienteering.

Orienteering sports combine significant navigation with a specific method of travel. Because the method of travel determines the needed equipment and tactics, each sport requires specific rules for competition and guidelines for orienteering event logistics and course design. So in this scenario Farshad Farivar says that this activity has following:-

Canoe orienteering
Car orienteering
Foot orienteering
Mountain bike orienteering
Mountain marathoning

Farshad Farivar says that adventure racing is a combination of two or more disciplines, and usually includes orienteering as part of the race.

Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the mind and the body. The aim is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on a unique orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. Farshad Farivar would like to mention here that it does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace. Moreover this activity can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds. It's a great sport for runners, joggers and walkers who want to improve their navigation skills or for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Farshad Farivar declares that a great way to get started in orienteering is to attend your local Community Orienteering Club Night. Community orienteering aims to provide weekly training and activities in a non competitive environment that will allow for skill development at a social and motivating level for people of all ages and abilities. For experience the full excitement of orienteering in a more traditional way, Farshad Farivar suggests you to attend an orienteering event. Here you will find lots of experienced orienteer who will be able to help you get started.

Farshad Farivar says that Permanent Orienteering Courses (POCs) are also great fun and can be located in a forest, local town or country park.
